Frequently asked questions

Below you'll find answers to some of the most common questions about the TENA SmartCare Change Indicator.

About the TENA SmartCare Change indicator™

What is the purpose of the Change Indicator?
The Change Indicator is designed to reduce the need for frequent, unnecessary manual checks and help you decide the best time to change your loved one’s absorbent product. This can provide better comfort for your loved one and more peace of mind for you.
How does the Change Indicator work?
The Change Indicator tracks the amount of urine in  TENA products. This information is then sent via the gateway and processed by Essity. Finally, a notification on the saturation status of your loved one’s absorbent product is sent to the TENA SmartCare Family Care app on your smartphone.
Does the Change Indicator detect faeces?
The Change Indicator does not detect faeces. For frequent faecal episodes, manual checking is still required.
Has the Change Indicator been clinically tested?
Yes. To date, one clinical study has been carried out with more scheduled. The Change Indicator is CE-marked and registered by the FDA in the US as well as Health Canada.
Is my data secure and protected?
Essity takes data privacy seriously. All processing of personal data, irrespective of whether we are the controller or the processor, is done in accordance with applicable data protection rules such as the General Data Protection Regulation ("GDPR"), the ePrivacy Directive ("ePrivacy Directive") as well as applicable local legislation.  Our Privacy Policy describes how Essity collects and processes the personal data and other information of the users. No, the system operates without WiFi. It uses the mobile network.

Using the TENA SmartCare Change Indicator

Does the Change Indicator only work with TENA absorbent products?
The Change Indicator has only been validated for use with TENA products and is not intended for use with other absorbent products.
Which TENA absorbent products can I use with the Change Indicator?
The Change Indicator has been validated for use with most TENA products: TENA Slip, TENA Pants, TENA Flex, TENA Stretch, TENA Brief, TENA . For the Change Indicator to attach securely, the absorbent product must have a textile-like outer lining. A full list of TENA products suitable for use with the Change Indicator, can be found at TENA SmartCare.
What do the different notifications mean and what action should I take?
"Dry" means there is no need to take  action. “Some urine” means there is a small amount of urine in the absorbent core. Normally, this will not require any action but if your Loved One has sensitive skin, or if the absorbent product has been worn for an extended period, you may want to consider change. When you receive the notification "consider change", this means it is time to consider changing the absorbent product.
How do I clean the Change Indicator?
We recommend using pre-soaked, alcohol-based without additives. Use alcohol-based disinfectant foam for the hooks on the back. When fully assembled, the Change Indicator can be rinsed under a tap.
How often should I clean the Change Indicator?
We recommend cleaning the Change Indicator as often as you would change bed linen or when required. If a sensor strip cannot be cleaned, replace it.
My Loved One uses different absorbent products during the day and at night. Will the Change Indicator still work?
Yes. The Change Indicator works with all TENA products listed here. For the system to perform reliably, make sure you use the correct sensor strip length for the night product. Check TENA SmartCare for more information. You will also need to register the absorbent product you are currently using in the app.
Can I use the Change Indicator when we go for a walk outside?
This is not currently possible. The range between the transmitter and the gateway is around 10 metres /33ft.
My Loved One walks around quite a lot in her house, can I add another gateway to make sure we are always connected?
Yes, this is possible. Installation is the same as the first gateway.
I care for two persons, can I connect both in the app?
No, this function is not yet available. The Change Indicator is only currently for use with one person.
We need to use different sensor strip lengths for day and at night. How can I manage that?
You can order the new strip length from the TENA SmartCare Shop.
