A case study of our incontinence products and services was carried out at four nursing homes. [2] The results show how the residents, carers and budget were affected when choosing TENA as their partner. The study showed that the holistic concept had a significant positive effect on not only the well-being of the residents, but also on the work environment.
Our holistic and integrated approach evaluated:
Essity’s holistic concept consists of TENA incontinence products and TENA Services. This includes training of staff, use of the products and optimisation of work routines and work structures. In other words, the study analysed a Product-Service-System (PSS), where pad products are offered and used in the context of a series of related services.
The study in Copenhagen involved four wards at four different nursing homes. All tests and measurements were made before and after the intervention. The study started in June 2008 and was completed in February 2009. 32 residents, in addition to carers and heads of the four wards, participated in the survey. All residents received help to handle incontinence.
The study was designed as an intervention study with tests being made before and after the intervention. The intervention consisted of the introduction of Essity’s holistic concept, TENA hygiene products and TENA Services. The results of the study were based on Essity being a sole supplier of both products and services during the intervention.
The results were studied using interviews with residents, carers and heads of wards, as well as diaries registering the frequency of each pad change for seven days and nights, before and after the introduction of TENA products.
Residents who were very satisfied with their incontinence protection increased from 46% to 55%
Residents who said their incontinence protection was comfortable increased from 39% to 69%
Residents who found that they were successfully helped to manage their incontinence increased from 39% to 69%
Easier changing of protective products resulted in an increase of free time by 33%
Staff found TENA Flex easier to change and felt it improved their working posture. Pad changing that previously required two carers could now be managed by one
Fewer leakages also meant that the amount of laundry was reduced
Consumption of incontinence protection was reduced by 20%
Overall, it was found that TENA’s holistic and integrated approach to continence care improved:
Furthermore, the study found that:
Individualised continence care can reduce cost
There is room for improvement in staff knowledge and competence, optimising continence care, and economy
